Working on upgrading/restoring a 60s/70s Jeunet and it has this Stronglight crankset on it. Trying to remove the crank arms from this bike but unsure of what needs to be done here. Is there something or some tool I am missing to get the crank arms off after unscrewing those hex bolts, or are the crank arms fixed to the spindle and I need to go ahead with removing the bottom bracket shell?

  1. Itchy-Position2591 on

Give the key (threaded piese that had the nut on) a whack from the threaded side so it comes off. Then you can pull of one crank arm. After that you have access to a nut on the crank spindle. Remove this aswell and the second arm with the spindle attached is also free to get removed. Be prepared to catch loose ball bearing balls when doing so. Some have caged bearings but it’s a 50/50 chance.

  2. The removal method is to hammer out the [cotter pins](https://www.sheldonbrown.com/cotters.html). Lots of hammering.

It works better if you can rig up some sort of anvil to support the crank.

I like to keep the nuts loose but on the pin so that I can unthread the nut past any thread damage that happens.
