My dad purchased this new in the early 2000s and I just recovered it from deep in my parents garage. So many memories of cruising around the trails with my family. I can remember the day he bought this and I got some little bright yellow specialized kids bike. We rode the shit outta those things together. This model seems to have been a unicorn, I can’t find a damn thing about it. Love the color scheme on it and I think it’ll make a great lite gravel/dad bike.
Phase 1:
-
clean up and de-nerdify (reflectors, old school speed sensor, etc)
-
ditch the grandpa seat and seat post
-
some new tires/tubes (hoping to fit some 700×40)
-
refresh the brakes and new chain
-
Enjoy
Phase 2 will dive into full front end upgrade and maybe updated components. Who really needs all those gears?!
Really excited to create some new memories with my kids on this bike that was a cornerstone of my childhood.
Any advice or plan of attack? I was going to spend some time looking at trek 7000 builds and just hoping everything matches. If I’m in for a headache tell me now lol

Check the dropout. trek basically used the same frame for all levels of their mt bikes and just made an adapter so the higher end bikes could have disc brakes, it just bolts on.
