I picked up this very used ‘09 Surly Long Haul Trucker frame and the original finish is pretty thrashed. I’m considering getting it media blasted / powder coated but I found this slight dent in the top tube, really just a flat spot about the size of a fingertip. Hard to see but you sorta see the light reflection bend around it just to the right of the big chip… and I can feel it.

I don’t mind a beat up looking bike but if I’m getting it recoated then I figure the ding will stick out and look crappy.

Would this be a good candidate for working the dent out with frame blocks? From what I’ve seen online they can get a dent closer but not 100% perfect and the remaining dimple usually needs to be filed and sanded down afterwards.

  1. You’d have to fill it with a material that will accept being baked in an oven to cure the powder coat. Lab Metal is the best or High temperature epoxy or JB Weld. You’ll have to sand it so it’s perfect or you’ll see the imperfection in the powder coating.
