In this video I will be talking about how expensive mountain bikes can actually be hindering the fun you could be having on the trails and you could actually be having more fun on more practical mountain bikes while saving lots of money.

Tre was the first mountain bike I started out on particularly the Tre Marlin [Music] [Music] 6 this was my first step into mountain biking and I love this bik fight because without it I don’t think I would have come to the realization that I have now now I’m not trying to single out trk I’m just most familiar with them and I’m sure a lot of other people are doing the same thing you see when you first start mountain biking and you don’t know anyone who actually mountain bikes you know very little about bikes after the Trek Marlin 6 I eventually moved up to to the original Tre Rosco and people would always tell me that’s a great bike but it doesn’t have a rearr axle and a rearr axle is something I never knew anything about and once I found out what that meant I was thinking to myself how did I pay over $1,000 and my bike doesn’t have that but the fact that I like this bike so much I didn’t think anything of it I just kept riding it but it wasn’t until I got my dream bike the track remedy when I realized something was off all right guys we got the rock garden right here we going to come down on the track remedy 8 and see if it can handle some Chunk we just did the top of rain maker you know that thing was made to jump but can’t it handle the tech we about to find out as much as I enjoyed this bike after spending almost $4,000 you would think there would be no issues whatsoever and the bike would have no hiccups but even at almost $4,000 that’s not the case I’m not a fan of these SHRM bricks at all so I would like to get these off at some point now remember I’m still fairly new to mountain biking and all the components and such but I know some brakes are personal opinion but this bike came with Shram code R brakes I never really knew about Shram brakes until now these were so bad it literally made me not want to ride the bike anymore and after spending so much money there’s no reason to have to be concerned about getting brakes situated this this is really when I noticed a lot of riders get handicapped into spending a whole bunch of money to get everything they need on a bike and this is kind of why I strayed away from the expensive bikes because after spending all that money you should have everything ready to go shortly after purchasing the track remedy 8 bikes online reached out and wanted me to check out the brand new polygon cscq t7 and after riding this bike and not having to deal with any issues at all and it’s more than half the price I was officially done with expensive mountain bikes man this bike is sick I actually underestimated this bike for the situation that I’m putting it in right now and it just it just shreds it was very hard for me to come to the realization that I work so hard to get that t remedy 8 and once I finally got it it hit me that there’s no reason I should be spending $4,000 on a mountain bike to feel like I truly have a capable mountain bike and now that we have companies like polygon and even Walmart putting out bikes with everything you need for a fraction of the price it really makes me wonder if these companies actually think about their customers after realizing what you could do with the bike for more than half the price this ultimately led me to sell the Tre remedy 8 and this sent me on a mission to really see if we actually need as much bike as the industry wants us to [Music] believe once I started exploring different types of bikes on mountain bike trails it opened my eyes to A Whole New World and I completely lost interest in all the new mountain bikes coming out nowadays because in my eyes for the average person it really makes no sense I started trying out rigid mountain bikes and I realized I’ve been missing out on so much fun thinking I needed the best mountain bike possible I remember thinking if I had less than 140 mm of travel that it wasn’t a good enough bike I slowly began to realize that I didn’t need any of the things I thought I did to have fun and it honestly felt like I was paying a lot of money just to fit in it’s very easy to get caught up into thinking you need to have the same if not better bike than other people on the trails but what I learned is there is no right or wrong way to mountain bike and when I learned this it changed my whole perspective on mountain [Music] biking but it’s funny this dude just said you’re crazy for riding drop bars out here that’s funny I love how people think this is just so bad or just so crazy it’s just riding a bike riding practical bikes made me really appreciate the trails and everything they had to offer turning what would normally be considered easy Trails into non-stop action pack Trails I think it’s awesome that companies like Walmart have decided to step up and make modern mountain bikes more accessible to the average Rider without handicapping them into having to buy a brand new bike once they decide they want to upgrade it really turns mountain biking from being expensive into investing into it at your own pace because you were able to get a good platform at a very low cost if it wasn’t for you watching my videos and supporting the channel I wouldn’t have been able to ride so many bikes and come to this conclusion so I’m very thankful for that I know a lot of people have been wondering why I haven’t written my Tre Rosco 9 as much and even though that’s still my favorite mountain bike at the moment it makes me way more excited to ride bikes that I feel aren’t out of the ram of possibility to obtain so when I see you on the trails you’ll know I’m just like you this bike actually feels good it feels Nimble it actually rides pretty good oh this is sick this thing is sick [Music]

Try smaller drop bars. I run 400mm. Yours look like flowy wings. I test rode a specialized with flared bars and hated it on top it was carbon and the shop had it tuned like poo
The best trek bikes are only worth $2000.
The fact this fella dropped $4k on that bike makes me wince.
I hate trek, always have.
remember that when we were kids we all did have fun on our bikes, we didn't even know how cheap or expensive it was, we just ride it blasting off the trails with our balls and leg power, we did not know about bike dimensions and components, we just ride it and have fun. right now the more we know the more complicated it is.
whatever bike you have right now just ride it, go and have some fun.. it's not the ride, it is the journey, let the moment bends and strides on our own pace.
Great video! And didn't mention lazy boy e-bikes. Thanks.
I’m a new subscriber watching old videos
Great video and message . Btw , the expression is LESS than half the price . Anything more than 1/2 or 50% could be anywhere from 51 to 99 . Keep speaking the truth and having fun riding .
What a fake video.
Thank you for this insight! I was always suspicious about the huge prices of bikes. Maybe it makes sense for professionals, but for normal people it makes no sense. I didn't want to subscribe watching your vids earlier, since I have a lot of pro cyclists channels, but this vid changed my mind!
Great video and great thoughts, mate! Thank you so much! My journey started back in the 90s with a hard-tail MTB. With gaining skills and confidence (and after nearly getting myself killed because of the V-brakes), I switched to a full-suspension MTB with disk brakes (mechanical ones, hydraulics were way too exotic and expensive back then). The difference was SHOCKING – I could do things with it that I didn't dream of doing with the previous bike. Then I had some changes in my life and stopped serious cycling for nearly 10 years. Restarted on a very moderate price full-suspension, alloy frame trail bike. After having ridden it for 10 years and nearly getting myself killed (again), this time because of a very modest performance of the shocks, I switched to a Scott Genius 700 Tuned (2018 model). Top notch trail bike. Again, the difference with my previous bike was SHOCKING. I'm 52 now and I can effordlessly do 5000 feet of ascent with it. Couldn't do it with my 26" alloy bike. Not to mention the descents. So, here's my view on the topic:
1) Is a higher class bike more capable – in general, yes;
2) Is a higher class bike also more expensive – in most cases yes;
3) Is a higher class bike more reliable – in most cases yes;
4) Do you need a higher class bike to have fun – definitely not!
Matty A., you are just so wrong about bikes. To begin, Trek is a well respected bike builder and offers some of the best designs and group sets to equip their bikes. You don't say what your experience to date has been with mountain bikes or how much research you did to find your choice so much of what I say here is generalized.
With my own 56 years of cycling experience (not 56 years of age, 56 years of riding as an adult) I can tell you this. Once you eliminate the casual rider's models and no-name imports aimed at people who don't want to ride but want own a bike with lots of gadgets on it you can start with bikes that have good, solid construction, decent materials and real components that will allow you to ride up to your ability as a serious but not yet seasoned cyclist. These will not carry state of the art components or materials but surprisingly, if chosen wisely are more bike than many newer (less than 1000 miles a year) riders can handle.
Once you have put a year or two on your 'first real (mountain) bike, you will begin to understand what works for you and what doesn't. That is when the 'bang' for your buck really kicks in. These bikes are often fully race ready for club rides and local events. They should last for years if you do your maintenance and have the advantage of upgradeability that will close the gap between mid-range and "pro" bikes without shelling out $3000 to $6000.
The pro bikes go to dedicated riders willing to sacrifice to spend thousands more on the latest and best bikes OR riders who have a modicum of ability and desire and a butt load of cash to spend on their egos. Real pro's don't buy their own bikes but riders who have immersed themselves in the sport may spend extra for small improvements and the pride of ownership.
Where I see you making your mistakes is buying a lower end 'pro' bike with the expectation that it will fit your style of riding and make you a better rider. That's not the way it works. Your ability and skill is what makes your bike perform. It doesn't work the other way around.
With the brakes, try changing the pads first, you might find they have cheap pads and top line pads might wake them up.
After 50 + years of riding I realized one thing Treks are overpriced,
I have bought several over the years.
Always stuck with their mid-range bikes.
And if being made in America means anything to you you're really going to spend some money.
Trek bicycles are not made here Surly bicycles are not made here… Surly is what I recommend to people that know what they're doing and want to build a custom bicycle. If you have the money, like to look cool and maybe you're not the greatest rider in the world check out Banshee. Still have a Banshee scream V2 aka the Panzer, probably never get rid of it.. I'm a Surly ice cream truck pilot now… Yeah I'm getting old, And thank you for no AI voice over.
Interesting video, sir. I had fun watching this, I definitely change my perception about consumer items from this bike video. You’re only as good as your equipment is, in my most humble opinion, a complete falsehood, and that is what companies want you to buy into, that’s how they earn a profit. Keep having fun with whatever bike you ride!
a 4k bike coming with sram guide brakes is criminal
Some good points here! Kudos to the bike industry for all the innovations that have been brought to market to give us so many wonderful choices. It's up to us to be judicious and use common sense to figure out what is the most fun on the trails where we ride.
Wait what? You just dislike the brakes? You know you can buy a bike with just the stuff you want? Takes a bit of scouting but it's there somewhere. Why not just change the brakes?
I get the point that you don't need to buy the best… it comes down to preference
i really enjoyed your video, thank you. your views and opinions are 100% on point and in agree fully.
Fantastic commentary, and great insight. 🔥
You guys are crazy! I thought I was adventurous, but no way I'm riding down boulders like you guys. God Bless you, fun watching – but that's all I'm gonna do. LOL.
Your culture believes they “need” all sorts of over priced crap, like $4k mtn bikes, exotic foreign cars, sneakers that cost hundreds of dollars, expensive haircuts, over priced liquor, hats, bags, homes, trucks. ANYTHING and EVERYTHING that cost a way stupid price, you folks will swallow it up!
If you had just looked into the history of mtn biking you would have stumbled on the word “Klunker “ and following that line would have explained it all.
You got bad habits my man.
Peace
Great video video man. Stay awesome
