I'm helping a friend change their tires and come across this metallic staple on the rim's seam. I sea the sticker on the side but don't have the documentation and I'm not sure how to read it. I just assume this is the wear indicator but I'm not too familiar.

The rim is worn anyway and I advised my friend to replace it ASAP, but this question is for my own education if someone has experience with that type of rim.

the wheel is not centered properly so when he is pressing the brake it’s putting more pressure on this part than the others

  2. Usually when a groove is used as the wear indicator it goes all around the rim. The groove just at the seam means either the rim is worn everywhere but the seam, or that groove is caused by something that got caught in the brake surface. Are there other wear indicators anywhere else on the rim? if you can’t find any I’d be tempted to say the rim has served its time and is due for replacement.

  3. No that’s the pin that holds the ends together.

In a way that is your “you got your monies worth out of it” indicator.

A wear indicator could be anything from a continuous groove around the middle of the braking surface or a series of dimples.
