  1. I saw a guy with firecrackers that explode when you throw them on the asphalt. Dogs run away quickly from the sound

  2. I slow right down near them. Their instincts tell them that if something is running from them, it has a reason to run. As for outrunning a dog, it’s possible, but even on a bicycle, it’s unlikely. That and you’re more likely to get into an accident while being chased at high speed.

  3. There are a variety of techniques.
Some people use pepper spray. Some people try to ride reeeaaallllyyyy fast.
Some people dismount the bike and fight the dog off with the bike, some people just walk the bike past the dog. Some people wait for the dog to leave. But often, these things require a foreknowledge of the dog’s intentions, or to see it coming.
I know some people who say getting bitten is just a part of riding, although I disagree. I recommend a person have a video camera to record the interaction, no matter the outcome, because it is important to be able to justify yourself, and perhaps, punish a wrong-doer who carelessly allowed their dog off the leash in areas that they should be leashed.
Where I live there are a lot of dogs who are in a grey area. They are fed by people, perhaps even ‘bought’ by people. But they live outside, freely roaming around the roads without any supervision. It is an issue!
I hope you are safe OP!

  4. Blowing an outdoor whistle. You can buy one at a sports shop, and nowadays they are usually attached to outdoor backpacks.

The loud sound usually makes them stop for a short moment, which gives you a few additional meters to run, and is not as invasive as pepper spray.

Alternative: spraying a little fluid from the water bottle (if you carry one) in their direction, not quite at them (depending how close they are). It also makes most of them stop.

  5. There are videos on YouTube of a person who travels frequently in dog infested areas and what he does is use a high-pitch sound device strapped to the rack of his bike and it’s specifically used to repel dogs. Every time the dogs got close, he would activate it and instantly get left alone. If it’s something that happens frequently, I’d recommend doing that.

Try and outrun it. If I can’t I get off the bike on the side away from it and make sure to keep the bike between me and the mutt. If possible give it a face full of water from my bottle.

I love dogs, especially the little guys BUT….. when I cycle and one runs out and goes for my ankles, they are met with all my might, and the bottom of my boot aiming for their heads. It always works, and yes, there has been some pain (physical for them, emotional for me), but I have lived on to tell the “tail” here.
