Question: Help an inexperienced bike packer with his route (even the smallest bits help), expectation management, and general biking tips for these lengthy trips (let's talk about gear specifics another time).

Introduction: Hey folks, in mid-March, I’m going on my first bikepacking trip across the Eastern and Far Southern Coast of Australia. This huge route of over 4000km should take me about 2,5 months. This will be my first long-haul trip on a bike ever (current record 150 km hahaha). I’m a Dutchie, so I have been cycling short distances my whole life. I wanted to do something different in my first year as a graduate; this seemed like the perfect plan. Trust me, I know I’m going to hell and back doing 4000km as my first ride. But since Australia, and this route, is totally unknown to me, I’ll gladly take some feedback from the more experienced folks (e.g. things I might have missed along the way, detours not worthy enough, some parts of the journey too dangerous, even nice restaurants/hostels along the way can help etc.).

Specifics: on a touring bike, mostly hostels/hotel stays, planning to book same-day, depending on where I end.

Pm me for more details. Batemans Bay to Nowra is stunning but everything is a detour with the exception of Ulladulla. I live just Nor West of Nowra but I’ve been all over the country, nothing is better for activities or more picturesque then the Shoalhaven (Morton national park and Jervis Bay). I will say though, the ride from Batemans to the Nowra seems like its all uphill, it will be tough.

Have a look at this post. This guy also made a map of predominantly off road routes and rail trails between Melbourne and Sydney.

There’s also some other routes in Tassie rather than the east coast. And check out the New England High Country 1000 for near Waterfall Way.

Coolangatta to Brisbane, I assume you’re just doing that to get to Brisbane airport? That would be the least enjoyable section I imagine. But there was a post not long ago here where some guy made a route from Toowoomba heading south I think. Gold Coast is also an international airport

There’s some rail trails in Northern Rivers and Byron Bay cycling club has a good route from Byron up to Queensland that takes you away from the coast.

  3. Hey I’m from Warrnambool. I would take the coastal route in but I have never done the Adelaide trip.

Warrnambool to Port Campbell is pretty boring so I would recommend you take the train to Camperdown for the Camperdown to Port Campbell trail, lots of towns in between with plenty to see without having to be on the main road all the way. When you are in town let me know I could do the first section with you or just show you around.
