I decided to put a Megarange freewheel in my cheap Frankenstein 'road' bike (it has drop bars) because I moved to a city with hills.
I thought my rear derailleur could handle it (Shimano Acera) but it's not shifting onto the big cog. I also put in a new chain – perhaps I made it too short? Biggest cog to biggest cog looks a little scary.
Any ideas?

Simple, chain is too short.
Assuming everything else is equal, have you tried tinkering with limit screws?
The chain is too short. That said, it might get too long for the opposite configuration
