  1. That’s called a quick release (QR). You pull it towards yourself and then loosen until you can remove the wheel, or the skewer (the axle looking thingy that goes through the actual axle).

    Also, the right amount of pressure when re-tightening the QR is to tighten the nut on the other side until the QR begins to engage while it’s at a 90 degree angle (facing you), and then push it back in. It’s very important to periodically check that the QR is still secure. I nearly had my front wheel shake loose when the front QR undid itself.

  2. Look up quick release lever videos. They “flip” open & closed. Tighten properly so your wheel doesn’t fall off.
