  1. Either bad limit screw setup, or more likely bent derailleur. Most derailleurs will do most speeds systems, because it’s the cable pull that make them move. Yours looks very basic, you could probably go for a Shimano Deore or Cues for improved shifting (and possibly life?)

  2. Yeah you bet, they’re super universal and relatively cheap to replace the chain, cassette, and derailleur.

Hope your son is OK, usually this locks up the wheel, potential crash, adds injury to insult of breaking your bike.

Consider taking it to a shop, you need a special tool to remove the cassette (actually a freewheel in this case) from the wheel, and the can also do a quick check that the wheel is still true. It’s super quick and easy for them to do it, they can make sure everything’s matched and adjusted correctly.

One possible cause for this is if the low limit screw was poorly adjusted from the start, so it’s best to make sure that’s dialed to avoid this in the future.

Aluminum bikes do that. The hanger will need to be realigned. There’s a tool that thread in. Usually a new one is pretty close if you get a replacement but tbh they’re really hard to figure out exactly the right one.

But the mechanism you decide to use shouldn’t much matter an Altus 310 or tourney TX800 are the normal mount.. There’s some that use a tab.. I can’t see if yours does..

The amount of abrasions on the derailleur shows that the bike has been dropped and or wiped out on the drive side. Bent derailleur hanger is the most logical conclusion.

It’s a 24” MTB, so your drink will grow out of it. No need to spend top dollar. Get an Acera, Altus, or Tourney (tourney is the cheapest)

Good chance the chain is twisted. A basic 7/8 speed KMC chain is only $15
