My chain derailed recently and now the gears will slip periodically (every 3 pedal strokes).
It looks to me like the jockey wheel is out of line with the sprockets. Does it like this that to you guys? The derailleur model is a shimano deore LX (on a 1987 cannondale st600).
My real question is do I have to get a new derailleur or can I just bend it? The black piece holding the derailleur is plastic so I don’t think I will be able to bend it permanently back into shape. But I have only been able to find the same model derailleur on eBay and I won’t be able to know if it’s bent or not.
I just got into bikes so take it easy on me

It would be the part that the deraileur is bolted into that is bent so you have to take the deraileur off and get a tool to bend it back
Personally I would start with making sure the derailleur is securely bolted to the frame. It looks like there is quite a gap there rn but it might just be the picture fooling me.
Very likely the derailleur hanger is bent and can be straightened by removing the rear derailleur and using a specific hanger alignment tool. Once this is straight, reinstall and adjust the derailleur, hopefully you won’t have to replace your derailleur. Since you are new to cycling it might be easiest to have your LBS straighten the hanger for you. It should be a low cost service. Good luck and keep wrenching!
That derailleur is done.
