In a moving moment at the Vatican, Giro d’Italia cyclists were received by Pope Leo XIV before starting the final stage of the race.

On Sunday, June 1, the 2025 Giro d’Italia came to an end with the last stage taking riders through the iconic streets of Rome.

As part of the closing of the competition, the 159 riders made a solemn stop in Vatican City, where they were received by the Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, at the foot of St. Peter’s Basilica.

The cyclists entered St. Peter’s Square, dismounted their bikes, and slowly crossed through the interior of Vatican City, in a non-competitive route filled with history, spirituality, and art. It was a special moment, full of emotion for many athletes, but especially for Colombian cyclist Nairo Quintana.

The rider from Boyacá, who was at the back of the group, surprised everyone by breaking protocol to stop before the Pope, shake his hand, and exchange a few words.

Other cyclists also went up to the pope to greet him.
