Hi all! We bought a second-hand bike for our son and didn't realize this problem on it. It looks this is for the gear shifter. Is this a fairly easy diy fix or does it need to be professionally done, and if so, how much do you think it'll cost to fix?

It can be done by yourself. YouTube could be helpful here for DIY; however, I reckon you could take this to your LBS for a quick and cheap repair.
Edit to add price: this would be $100 max at my LBS. I’d ballpark $35-$50 where I’m at.
It is a fairly easy fix. One most people should be able to do themselves. Just need to buy cables. Just look for gear shifter cables.
Easy fix for (your local bike shop), not expensive, too (obviously depends a bit on where you’re located).
frayed shifter housing, needs to remove the shifter cable (usually replace it because it has to be cut at the end), you could then replace the shifter housing with a new one the approx same lenght, or if there is enough loose, just cut like 3cm to remove the frayed part (cable cutters ideally)
it’s an easy but not neccesarily quick fix, but it also is an easy and quick fix for a bike shop if the skill or tools are not available
You can just replace the cable and housing and then reindex the shifter. Fairly straight forward job, about 20 minutes. But if you’ve never done any bike wrenching and don’t have tools then it might be easier to take it to a bike shop and see what else is wrong too.
It’s an easy fix but it’s easy to fuck up cutting the housing and cable clean enough that they have minimum friction.
Yeah its probably pretty easy to fix DIY
Idk about that exact grip shifter but I dealt with some others before and I remembered it involved an Allen key to remove the shifter and some wrench to loosen the cable from derailleur. Some pliers on the ready to assist removing the cable if needed.
Ofc it’s cheaper to DIY but if not comfortable take to a reputable shop nearest you
SF bike shop prices:
$3-7 for a new cable
$2-3 per foot for cable housing
$25-35 for labor
You need a new shifter cable, shift cable housing, 2 shift cable housing ferrules, zip ties, and a shift cable crimp. Tools needed are Allen keys, maybe Torx keys, and housing cutters like part tool CN-10. You probably need a YouTube video to learn to index the derailleur after replacing the cable and housing. Also grip shifts tend to be frustrating to get the cable out of.
This would be about $50 USD at a shop in about 30 minutes.
It’s doable DIY but it’ll take time and effort. Probably triple the time, plus you’ll need to source the parts and tools, probably acquired from the bike shop that could handle it easily.
If it’s internally routed in the frame that’s another puzzle for a diy-er to solve.
Depends if you want to learn to diy or just have it handled for you. You’ll probably break even on parts and labor vs parts and effort and tools either way you decide.
