  1. you’ll need a new chainring and a new rear wheel with proper hub alignment/dishing so that it’s in line with that chainring, and a single speed chain. That’s the bare minimum. You could also rebuild your wheel with a single speed hub and dish it yourself if you really dont want to buy a new rear wheel, but spokes and a hub and hours of tedious wheel building later and you’ll probably just wish you bought a new rear wheel and dished it yourself.

  2. Don’t. It’s significantly more work than you’d think. The biggest obstacle is that your multi-speed bike is designed for the chain to move up and down the chainring and cassette. It’s flexible. A single speed has the chainring and rear freewheel in alignment which means you’ll either need to “dish” the hub to one side – an advanced process – or get a new rear wheel.

  3. I’ll assume you don’t mean a fixie. A long while back, got a kit from Surley, to convert a 1970’s Fuji race frame.
Also got a single speed front. With the thin tires rode too harsh for a commuter.
TBH I sold the setup at a swap meet. Got an All City Nature Boy, which I still have.

  4. Hi, some people won’t understand your ways but I do. I have a 1985 Fuji Del Rey and I am currently converting it to single speed just for the love of the game. I love a project and it’s my commuter beater bike so why not. Anyway here is my bare minimum list:

Single chainring crankset that works with your bottom bracket (or a chainring/bolts and compatible cranks)

Conversion kit (will be easiest if your wheel uses a cassette, not freewheel). These are easy to find, look up “single speed conversion kit”. They come with spacers so you’ll be able to align your cog with the front chainring. Also you have to choose a cog size. I got this one: https://www.jensonusa.com/Foundation-Single-Speed-Conversion-Kit

Brake levers if yours are currently shifter/brake combos. And probably new brake cables if so.

Single speed chain. I got KMC S1.

I also switched out my bars and stem but those are optional.

Something to research is what kind of gear ratio you would want, which is discussed commonly in the single speed sub and fixed gear sub i’m sure. I chose 42/16 because there’s some hills near me.
