I still have my old Giant OCR2 from 2003 and love it. It is more of a ride-around commuter bike now but I don't want to get rid of it. The derailleurs have finally given up the ghost and I am thinking about the best way to upgrade the drivetrain. Any thoughts? I want it to stay roughly the same, but should I try and get a 2x or 1x front derailleur? Is that even possible?

I haven't really done this level of bike repair before, just adjusted the derailleurs. I am not looking to spend a ton of money, just want to reliably keep the old guy rolling.

The least expensive repair would be to just replace your derailleurs (if those derailleurs on your bike are actually broken). The current Sora FD-R3030 triple front derailleur is a drop-in replacement for the existing front derailleur on your bike, and the current Sora RD-R3000-GS mid-cage is the drop-in replacement for the existing rear derailleur on your bike. Both are compatible with your existing STI levers and these derailleurs are not expensive.

What makes you think the derailleurs are broken?

Often rear derailleurs just need to be taken apart and re-greased. I’ve got 20+ year old derailleurs that shift just fine.

Also there’s no such thing as a 1x front derailleur. 1x drivetrains only have one chainring.
