im new to commuting on my bicycle. I noticed after around 350 miles my bike is starting to skip gears. I have like 8 gears to select from. 1-3 seem to be fine, 4-5 (the gears i use the most) seem to lose tension and i spin freely then it will catch on to the gear and i can pedal normally then it will get lose again. Gears 6-8 work well too. When i inspect the gears it seems like the shifter is in-between gears and jumps back and forth while pedaling.

I am looking to repair it myself but i dont even know where to start. I have alot of general tools, but if anyone has an idea what this problem could be. so i can look it up on youtube. can seem to find any videos with a similar problem.

  1. Adjusting gears is fairly simple and generally all you need to do is adjust the tension on the rear derailleur by twisting the adjuster where the cable comes in.

If you bike is new your shop may do this for free.

  2. Is that a brand new bike? It’s common for new shifter cables to stretch out with initial use. Indexed shifting requires a good deal of precision, so a little cable stretch can really throw off your shifting. This could be your problem

Whatever the cause, you can likely fix this yourself. Here’s a great video on how to adjust a mechanical rear derailleur: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkZxPIZ1ngY
