
I think it could just be dirty, but when riding up a hill, it sometimes skips.
I replaced the rear cassette last spring because it wasn't meshing with the new chain I got, so that's not the problem.
Is a new sprocket the play, or is there a cheaper/ more effective solution I'm overlooking?

It’s normally pretty hard to answer these questions affirmatively based on photos, but yeah, that small chainring is absolutely clapped.
First, clean it. If it still skips replace it.
It is too worn.

If you let your drivetrain get this dirty, it’s probably a couple hundred kms already overdue
