I have a 2021 stump jumper alloy that I bought used about 2 years ago. It has pretty much all of the stock components still on it. I’m considering upgrading the brakes to shimano deore, replacing the tires, and getting new pedals/maybe switching to clipless. I ride pretty frequently, and while I love this bike it is pretty heavy. I am a pretty decently fast climber, but I think I would be substantially faster on a lighter bike.

Should I upgrade the stumpy? Or save up and sell it and get a new bike?

  1. The other day I lifted a fully kitted (insert, spare tubes, etc) sworks bike on a trail to see how light it was. It was 5 ibs lighter than my stumpy alloy with insert and tube. So if weight is a big concern I don’t think it’ll be a significant difference. Also the weight difference between carbon and alloy frame is around 3ibs. Most of the weight came from the rims. I say just upgrade.

Unless you’re looking for a different travel bike if would say upgrade, if you wanted a downcounty or enduro go for it but if you want a trail bike upgrade.

The fastest easiest cheapest way to get faster on climbs if you don’t need the grip going down is faster rolling tires.

Will the upgrades give you that NBD feeling? New stumpy 15 evo is calling you my friend…

  4. Tires make a world of difference. If you liked the bike you probably won’t like a new one so much that it justifies the cost.

  5. Have a look maybe good deals with all the components you want even from other brands, particularly the fork would be good to upgrade
