I'm working on this 80's Teal Peugeot and am wondering if there are any recommendations for upgrades on the brakes. Currently Weimann center pull calipers with 60mm reach to 27×1 1/4 wheels. I have a side pull caliper from another project, and it fit but the reach was only like 45mm and didn't align with the wheels. Or should I just use these Weimann with some new pads? Thanks!

  1. Tekteo R559 are sidepull and have up to 73 mm reach. New pads will get you some improvement, too I guess.

Tektro r559 is pretty much the only option for side pull.

My vote is new pads on the center pull. Center pull brakes are actually pretty good. Yours looks nice. New pads and send it.

I thought of centerpulls as old-timey stuff for a while but apparently you can dial the pull in very well, new pads and see that they’re adjusted properly will definitely get you by

The Tektros are dual-pivot and would definitely be an upgrade but you need to buy them obviously

Consider your levers as well, if they are the old uncomfortable kind that would be a good place to upgrade too

  4. Some say center pulls are the superior technology.

In any case you have a lot of room for improvement by getting better pads. I’d start with that.

Also you don’t have to pick old-style pads. Modern road brake pads will fit, and it’s also possible to use V-brake pads.

  5. The Bikespeeds channel on YouTube has lots of restoration videos that include restoring these; they look killer when they’re done. A very cool aesthetic.

Of course, their shop has got an ultrasonic cleaner, a polisher, etc. Anyway there are few parts in those brakes and they look straight forward to rebuild. I think they’re cool.
