Hey guys,
Just stumbled across this subreddit and I love it. I plan on cycling across Japan next year for about 2/3 months. I haven’t bought a bike yet. Have you guys got any recommendations? From Australia.
I like the look of this blokes bike as well.

Also would prefer a flat bar, not a drop bar
Trek 520
I’d reccomend a 700c touring frame. Build it up how you like.
26″ frames are overkill if you are riding mostly on roads. (700c touring rigs do fine on dirt roads and chill trails). ime 26″ frames with 2″ tires are more sluggish than 700c with say 38mm tires.
650b can be a good in-between.
89+ Specialized Expedition. Go big or go home. 89+ has 135mm rear hub spacing. But any of that gen of touring bike would be great.
Anything with a 1 1/8 steer tube and canti brakes
Does anyone know what handlebar broski has
Oh damn I thought you were Luca at first was going to compliment your vids!
You can make a very nice touring bike out of any Vintage frame, just make sure it fits you (stand over the top tube and make sure there’s at least an inch or so of space between your gooch and the tube)
Depending on the budget you can absolutely ball out as you see fit. Ideally you will want to convert the 7s rear into something with a lot more range. I personally love the Advent X system for cost to performance ratio. Will need new wheels most likely since a lot of vintage bikes come with a 7s hub and you need an 8 or above.
Arrive in country with a couple of options to buy. Buy and ride the least awful. Make it yours. Enjoy your journey. Find someone else who might enjoy it. Repeat.
Is that unknown route? A gt with jam bars
You want to buy the bike there? Check out blue-lug in Tokyo. Or build it up before? (Search for 80s MTB) if you got some spare cash: Heaps Good Garage are in Austrialia, he is the founder of Crust Bikes.
I cycled Japan two years ago, they sure love nice bikes. So many good shops all across the country: HumHumHug in Kyoto is also worth checking out.
I’d wait til you get there and find a used bike over there, it’ll be easier than trying to ship something over there.
Go Surly! Pay a bit, but you got a friend for life.
