Im new to mountain biking and inherited this bike , I was cleaning it the other day and so much gunk came out the rear cassette , is it time for a new one.
Impossible to tell visually. You can gauge if new sprockets and/or chain are needed with methods under “measuring chain wear” on this page [https://sheldonbrown.com/chain-wear.html](https://sheldonbrown.com/chain-wear.html)

You can tell if a cassette is worn out by how well it works. If it doesn’t skip, miss shifts, or make a horrible noise, then it’s probably fine.

Install a new chain. Of the chain slips then there is a great possibility you need a new cassette.

I’d get your chain checked for stretch first. If new chain is required get a new chain. If new chain slips and won’t shift properly, then yeah, probs new cassette too. But looks pretty good tbh. Just needs a good clean, chain too i’d say.
I’ve seen some cassettes come through that are literally spikes. That’s what happens when you ride a stretched chain for basically ever 🤣
Maybe invest in some good chain cleaner/lube/wax etc for your riding conditions.
There’s heaps out there and if you ask 10 people you’ll get 12 different answers to what is the best one.
