Got this one on a whim and includes a tubular campy wheelset, NIB Rally dangler, NIB wide range freewheel. I'm thinking if the frame isn't rusted too, badly strip the frame down to the chrome, remove one ring, 0 out the front pusher, install the Rally dangler, and make it into a 1x with a parts bin Ofmega downtube shifter. Bars…probably VO Milan? Front rack and basket. What would you do?

  1. What is a rally dangler?

I’d keep it pink and polish the visible chrome. Ritchey Venturemax or Beacon bars; something a lot more shallow. Switch to 700c wheels and pray the brakes still reach. Install a wider freewheel/cassette depending on the new wheels. That whole Campy kit looks pristine! I’d be tempted to swap to a White Industries triple or an equivalent offering a 20t little ring though. Love me some range and this one is very geared for speed currently.

Tbh I wouldn’t change a thing, max out the tyre width and just shred this in the summer

  3. Bit of a tricky one.. nice frame, Tommasini frames aren’t getting any more common, especially with Columbus Air tubing. Pretty thin and not exactly designed for hauling stuff.

Frame also looks on the bad side of rusted, would also want to see what the bottom bracket shell looks like.

Basket and rack will be tricky due to no eyelets on the fork, and I personally wouldn’t clamp p-clamps on an Air fork

VO Milano bars are 25.4mm and this stem will be 26.0mm

Narrow-wide chainrings for 135 BCD probably exist on Ali, haven’t checked it out though. Would consider keeping 2 chainrings though, as then you can keep the derailleur

I tend to keep road bikes as road bikes. That’s what the geometry is made for and IMO that’s all it’ll ever be really good at.

If it were mine I’d lace in some clincher rims, max out the tire width and change the bars for compact bars and go do zoomies!

  5. The drivetrain is in really good condition but its just not enough gearing for all the hills where I live.

  6. Please don’t make this a one-by with a rack. This is a high end racing bike. It doesn’t even have rack eyelets.

Only thing to do is relace the hubs to clincher rims and touch up the frame. Don’t strip the paint.

I’d keep the corncob rear cluster, yes on Rally Dangler, but go to a TA/Stronglight 50.4 crank with 53/33t chainrings. Hi-Lo that bitch.

Probably relace the hubs to 650B Standalones in black or greyano with brass nips & bare AeroLites and rock 32mm GP5K’s. Mid-reach Shimano or TRP calipers unless there’s a decent mid reach Campy dual pivot out there.

I like the VO Milan bar a lot on a stem that’s long enough to have the front hoops out where the hoods would be. Guidonnet levers forever.

I’ve got a bunch of stick shift levers in my bin that I like, but I’d probably use this frameset as an excuse to finally try out SLJ’s- especially if going naked chrome.

If it can go naked chrome… bronze Standalones and absolutely get some VO smooth fenders in there on dropout tabs.

I would just remove the rust and cover the cavities with goldfinger gilding paste to make those scars more refined.

  9. I wouldn’t change a thing.
Except a clincher type wheelset because tubular is a pain.
    Just a good service.

  10. Gotta deal with that rust.  It’s very high carbon steel.  That means once the rust gets established under the paint it will keep going.

It doesn’t matter if you powder coat it, or rattle can it.

It’s the reason there aren’t many around. Once the sweat got under the finish it was only a matter of time.

  11. Hit it with some frame saver. Remove any surface rust and hit it with some touch up paint. Other than that just sone fresh rubber if needed.

These Tommasini Prestiges ride beautifully as-is. Do not put a rack or anything heavy on it, the tubing is super thin and really only meant for a rider that weighs under 200 lbs. Deal with the rust and grease/replace all bearings. Get a clincher wheelset. I have Challenge Strada Bianca 700x30s on mine and that is the absolute max this frame will fit.

New cables, new tires, and a deep clean with some dish soap, vinegar and a toothbrush. Gloss clear coat over the frame, she’s earned that patina.
