In Australia it's illegal to cross the road when the pedestrian signal is red, or to cross the road within some short distance – 50m? – of a pedestrian crossing. So it's legal to cross the road without waiting in the middle of the block where there's no crossing nearby.

I visited Berlin last year and made the mistake of crossing a quiet street.
Within seconds the Bereitschaftspolizei swarmed onto the street accompanied by the Spezialeinsatzkommando and GSG 9.
After the deployment of nerve gas into my vsicinty and a couple of neutralising gunshots to the leg, the situation was contained and I was made aware of the seriousness of my actions.
Initially, the rentners were alarmed but panic soon subsided once word broke that I had been deported back to England and banned from ever entering the Vaterland again

Either make it without sensors and it goes red for cars when button pressed or make it with sensors and if there's no traffic approaching, it will turn green for peds automatically.
