  1. I’ve used the etnies in the past and liked them well enough, but the grip on the five ten freerider pro is a step above. Great shoes.

Stiffer, which has the most impact to feel – less pedal feel, more supportive, more power, less fatigue. grip is still pretty good.

Great! if you ride rough trails then go FiveTens. Vans are good but not good enough for rough stuff unless you like to shuffle your foot every 10 seconds. the MTB specific Etnies sucked, I tried these and hated them.

  4. Stiff and extremely grippy. Note the pros have a narrow fit, it doesn’t work for everyone. But if it fits it’s the best MTB shoe out there.

  5. 5-10s are great but they are not very durable, with flats I barely get a whole season out of them

  6. I’ve tried two etnies shoes. They’re narrow and have less traction than the 510 freerider. I also prefer the regular freerider to the pro. I think the pro is narrow, too.

Stiff and grippy af, only downside is if you put your foot down in the wrong place you can’t just shuffle it over, you have to lift it up and replace it cause of the grip

  8. I used to solely (hehe) wear Vans to ride. Just buy the Five Tens it will change your life and you will never go back. The soles are designed for pedals, not only will you be more comfortable on the pedal you theoretically get more power with the stiffer sole as well. The sole grip on pedals are grippier than the socks on a grandma in a mental institution

Stiff and extremely grippy. It’ll be a night and day difference for performance. Vans are not a good MTB shoe.

  10. The Vans BMX shoes do it for me. Really surprised at the grip and durability. Personally my knock on MTB specifics flat shoes is the stiffness – in one regard that equates to less energy transfer loss – but I don’t like the feel. All depends on the type of riding you do though. If you look at a lot of the Rampage Riders they are in Vans!

  11. I’ve tried a bunch of different (and even more expensive) MTB shoes, and Five Ten are my favorites. I like the canvas Freeriders, too, but I switch them up a lot. Rode the pro just last night. Great shoes!

  12. There’s a reason there is a ton of people use them, myself included.

    They’re really good.

  13. I have no idea why this would be the case, but I have a pair of those pros sitting in a box in my garage, because the just don’t have the grip of my canvas pair(s). Rode them for a month trying to break ’em in, but never got the grip I was used to. Went back to the canvas model (whatever it’s called) and perfect from day 1. No idea. Shouldn’t the grip be the same? Just a perception thing for me? Hard to imagine the latter, but I accept that it’s a possibility.

  14. Check Ross, I’ve purchased a pair of 510’s there (clipless) for about $30. Retail approx $150

  15. I used vans for a couple years and loved them but tried some five tens and they were so much better than vans. Been wearing five tens for the past several years now.

  16. I love em. They are nice and stiff so u get good pedal power and support with the amazing stealth rubber.

I have these, although a couple years old, in a mid top and like them for mountain biking. Very comfortable and wear and clean up well.

  18. I have the 5.10 freerider pros.
    I love the grip.
    2 issues.

    1. They are pretty stiff so basically minimal pedal feel.
    2. In order to change foot position you pretty much need to lift and reposition. Because they are so grippy.
    BUT.
Even if you misplaced a foot and don’t dial it in, your foot WILL be firmly planted and wont slip. Which is confidence inspiring in rough sections. You can always adjust after.

Over all id give them a 4.5/5
I love the grip. And they reduce foot fatigue.
They lose that half point from having minimal pedal feel. But the confidence you get of absolutely being locked in is great.

  19. Five ten has gone way done in quality. Idk abt these specifically, but i did the sole strength test on a mates 510s after he was complaining.
The folded and twisted on themselves with ease (twist and folding = shitty support = bad)

  20. Freerider pros are the best blend of stiffness and grip that ive found. Regular freeriders are even grippier, but the soles are way too soft.

  21. Wore 510s for years, now 100% all in on Ride Concepts. As grippy, more durable, better built uppers.

  22. I loved my Etnies, just switched to Crankbros Stamp shoes because I fell in love with Stamp 2 pedals, and I’m in love. I was worried because I loved the etnies but the Crankbros fit my wide foot better

The 5 10 sole is super grippy, nobody else really does grip like 5 10. To the point it’s even hard to move your feet if you get them on the pedal wrong! Actually quite weird this and some people hate it and prefer a less grippy sole.

Personally I found the Pros too stiff and lacking in feel. I went back to the classic Freerider. I’d say the Pro is a better shoe overall, but I just didn’t like riding in it.

This is totally a matter of taste though, lots of people love them. I like a soft shoe, but that has downsides too.

Oh lots of people are confusing the vans bmx shoes with normal skate/fashion vans which aren’t the same, so be careful of that.

The best example I can think of about feel and taste, is that Five Ten made a Sam Hill signature model of the VXI shoe, which was really highly reviewed and popular. Sam literally refused to ride in them except for press shots. Not because it was a bad shoe but because it just didn’t suit him.

I can’t ride in Vans anymore, the soft sole (on classic models) hurt my feet too much. I have ridden Etnies in the past (old Lo Cut models) and the grip was always stellar with a stiff sole. But they had no traction off the bike, so any section that needed to be walked became treacherous. I run Freeride Pros now and they’re much better off the bike and better toe protection. But it seem like the soles don’t last super long. Trade offs I guess.

  25. Worldly_Papaya4606 on

I don’t know the models but if you’re coming from BMX, MTB flat shoes like 5 10s may feel a lot different. MTBers like me love them to keep us connected in rough terrain and good pedalling efficiency, but pedal ‘feel’ is pretty dead.

  26. TapBusiness5341 on

Great shoe for riding with awesome grip and the toe box is solid, you can’t go wrong with them.

  27. I have the same 510s. They’re are very “sticky” on the pedals. But my pedals are studded, so that helps a lot!

  28. Freeriders are awesome. I can push/pull almost as well as on my eggbeaters. My go-to when I was recovering from wrist fractures

  29. For me, the Fiveten freerider are the best shoes I have ever had. But the version that appears in the photo. Because last year I bought the fabric version and I didn’t like it at all. They deform a lot and do not support the foot in areas with many stones.

  30. I’ll always recommend Specialized 2FO. They are almost always on sale and are SUPER grippy and durable. Vans Bmx can’t touch it (very low grip and sole is too flexy, plus Vans just aren’t durable).
