this is what old t-shirts are for!
floss it once to get the gunk out.
Then, spray with your choice of lubricant and then floss once more.
Just put some cardboard behind it and a rag underneath and spray brake clean on it, does a way better job.
I use a thin screwdriver to get the big stuff out first, then floss like this. The shoelace idea sounds great, I'll try next time.
