  1. It’s a forged dropout. Your best bet is having someone replace the dropout. But whether that’s worth the effort is up to the owner of this frame.

    Btw the chain needs some attention.

  2. This is a very high strain area with very grave consequences if the weld fails at speed.

    Choose your own adventure, but I wouldn’t.

  3. It’s brazed in, so a fairly skilled repair to not overheat. The proper fix is a new dropout.

  4. From what I’ve seen possibly replace dropout – is brazed in and a frame builder knows what to do.
    It’s nothing a hobby welder should attempt – except for training purposes if the frame is not going to be used.

    Hence tell friend to get a new frame (luckily these entry level Trek frames are around a lot for cheap, def only a fraction of the price for a welding shop) and take the old one as a practice object.
