Madam Florentine, how are you? Quite well, thank you. Madame Tel, where is the bathroom? Bathroom? Hi. Let’s discuss poop in the palace of Versailles. Hygiene and smells were major issues in the glory days of this French palace. At its height, it had 5,000 people on ground and only 300 toilets. And not toilets like we know them today. The higherups like the king and the queen had commodeses in their chambers with a chamber port underneath for them to do their business into. These forbidden gravy bowls would be regularly emptied out by the servants. But the biggest issue was where did these hundreds upon hundreds of workers go to do their own business? Poop and privacy were not connected issues at this time. And so people could and would just pop a squat in the palace hallways. Even with their commodes, the royals were badly behaved. The princess Dora is recorded to urinate while walking, making her a hated personality among the servants who would have to clean up after her. And apparently even Louis the 14th himself would just take a deuce while riding in a carriage. It’s really no wonder that these people were so hated. This wasn’t an uncommon practice in Europe at the time. But what made Versailles so infamous was the sheer number of people and the comparable splendor of the palace. We have numerous writings from the likes of Horus Walpole about the god awful gagworthy smells not only in the palace but also in the gardens. See, Versailles was never meant to host this many people for this long. It was originally a hunting lodge before the sun king decided to officially move his court here. And unlike other kings, he didn’t move around different palaces because he liked Versailles so much. So it’s really no surprise that when Louis V came of age, one of his first orders was to fix the hygiene issue of Versailles. One of his commands was that the hallways needed to be cleared of dirt and feces on a weekly basis, which makes you realize that that wasn’t happening before. And if you enjoy facts like this from history, then keep joining me here at Kinky History.

'forbidden gravy bowls' the amount of psychic damage I got from that line is too immense to describe
brutality Lmao…
maybe Louis 14th wanted this because he had a rectum health issue… "if i can't shyt normally then no one else can"
Imagine acting like a non-housebroken Chihuahua while living at Versailles
This is untrue and has been debunked by experts
That hunting lodge was the origin though, it got a whole lot larger under louis XIV
Also, the peeing while walking thing – incontinence would have been common, wouldn't it, with all those births.
What a shitty situation…
Name of the music ? So beautiful for such a disgusting topic !!
Great contrast, exquisite sense of humour π !
