Potentially stupid question, but is this dent in the side of the chainstay there deliberately to make space for the crankset, or should I be concerned? Frame is a 1993 Marin Bobcat Trail.
Totally normal and common. This area of the bike is a tricky part for bike designers. Three things are competing for space: the rear tire, the frame and the crankset. To make space for wider tires, without a ridiculously wide crank setup, they have to look for ways to find millimeters.

Yes, that’s deliberate to make space for the crankset, mine has that as wellÂ
