Hey everyone,
I had to disassemble my MTB wheel because of a broken spoke, and I took the chance to check how well I’d taped the rim.
To my surprise, the rim tape (cheap stuff from AliExpress) was still perfectly adhered and looked great overall. The wheel was also holding pressure just fine, so the setup was working well.
However, I noticed that the tape is slightly damaged around the spoke holes — the edges there aren’t very smooth, and you can see a bit of dried sealant that must have leaked through.
I’ve read that some people recommend putting electrical tape over the holes before applying the rim tape.
Has anyone tried that? Any advice on how to improve rim taping?
Thanks!

You need to put a liner over your spark holes. They’re cheap. They come in a packs of six or nine on Amazon. It will allow you to take over it and get the proper seal without damaging your tape. Good luck and great job.
Yes, I always use one wrap of electrical tape first. However, I would suggest getting a deburring tool and cleaning up those badly machined spoke holes first.
