    I’ve seen this before, and I don’t remember why it was sometimes done, I mean why the dropouts weren’t fully machined.

  2. Just going to wait for all the comments about how the dropout might not have been designed to handle the load, without the additional support, from all the people who think it’s possible this dropout was maybe made from some kind of steel aluminum can hybrid.

  4. Used as intended, as far as I’m concerned. You didn’t state your purpose, but that would be an easy decision if I wanted to do a single speed conversion.

    I did the exact same thing to do a single speed conversion on my 1987 rockhopper. 

    Riding for about a year with some bikepacking trips done and it’s been great.
