Price range for “starter” bike should be between 100-350 used. 100 being a decent chromo with some wear . 350 being a mint condition top end

    New price range
300-1k . 300 being a good solid entry level complete . With chromo frame/bar/fork.. 1k being a top end complete with top end parts top to bottom .

What to look for is tight bottom bracket (crank/pedal area) no wobble , no clinking

Any cracks to frame in any location.

Tight hubs/bearings (the inner part of the wheel/axle)should spin freely and without any noise . The bolts should be snug and tight. Similar to BB mentioned above.

Slight rim wobble (side to side movement) is normal, especially in rear wheel, but shouldn’t be too crazy. Wheel “hop” (up and down movement)is alot more concerning , and will probably need replaced soon.

Headset (spacer looking part below )stem (part that holds bars)/top cap (ehere stem bolts down) should all be snug. Any movement here is generally a bad sign. Especially if bolts are tight. Could be fork issue. Could just needs spacers. But is a bad sign because its never good to ride like that. And if it has been.. not good.

A minor thing to note is if chain is lubed and and sprocket and cogs are lubed not a big deal. Lube is cheap .. but if they aren’t its a general sign bike probably wasnt cared for.

  2. Narrow down your total budget including replacing grips, tyres etc.
Google is your friend for checking that it is what it claims to be.
Obviously if within budget, full cromo frame, forks and bars is the way to go.
Ask owner for proof of ownership, or info about it.
This is of course for used bikes
New, again set your budget, you’re talking an absolute minimum of $450 for a base model now excluding sale prices.

I’d say the first thing to figure out is what size you need. Assuming you’re going with a 20″ wheel bike, you’ll still want to look at the top tube length of these bikes and figure out what makes sense for your height. That’ll narrow down which bikes will actually make sense for you to take a closer look at.
