Can’t remember any specific ones, but I did see them pretty often at locally owned “general store” type shops that you end up at in small towns. There are also shops dedicated to outdoor gear in most of the bigger towns. I remember a good one in Ullapool

Ullapool, Durness, John OGroats for sure. Also found plenty of campsites that sell or give for free half used ones.

You can purchase Coleman or Primus-compatible gas canisters (with screw-thread EN417 Lindal valves) at various outdoor and camping stores in Scotland, especially in towns along the North Coast 500 (NC500) route

These canisters work with Primus stoves as shown in your attached image and are widely used by cycle tourists and campers

    Where to Buy Fuel Canisters
Outdoor Shops: Stores like Tiso and Cotswold Outdoor (often found in cities like Inverness, Edinburgh, and Glasgow) stock Coleman, Primus, Campingaz, and other EN417 thread-compatible gas canisters

Petrol Stations & Local Shops: On the NC500, some larger petrol stations and village shops near camping areas often stock gas canisters, including Coleman C500 and compatible brands

Online Retailers: If you prefer to pre-order, UK retailers such as Alpkit, Sub Zero, Funky Leisure, and Halfords offer Primus and Coleman canisters for delivery within the UK.eBay UK can be an option for bulk or last-minute needs, but local pickup is usually not possible.

    Canister Compatibility
Both Coleman C500 and Primus Power Gas canisters feature a standard screw-on, self-sealing Lindal valve (EN417), ensuring compatibility with Primus and similar stoves

Other brands like Campingaz, GoSystem, and Highlander also offer compatible canisters in the UK

Tips for Sourcing on the NC500
Buy canisters ahead of your off-grid stretch or in main towns (e.g., Inverness, Ullapool, Durness).
Ask local shops, campsites, and petrol stations; many stock a limited number during high season
Outdoor-specific shops have the best selection, while supermarkets typically do not stock camping gas.

If you’re starting the NC500 in Inverness, outdoor stores there are likely to have just what you need. For smaller villages, stop in advance or call ahead to avoid running out. Always ensure the canisters are screw-threaded and not the older pierceable type, which are much less common in the UK for modern stoves.
