Recently swapped the rear wheel and cassette from a 7 speed to a 10, and swapped over a 10 speed chain on this 80s raleigh. Mainly as a temporary fix for the (slightly wonky) heavy steel original wheels

Everything was shifting relatively shifting smooth for a while until I shifted into the small chain ring and the chain jammed in-between the small and middle. Understand this is a chain thickness and chain ring spacing issue.

What options do I have here..

  • If sticking with 10 speed do I need to replace the full chainring and crank assembly? (Shimano Deore LX)
  • Is there a simpler (cheaper) fix to adjust the spacing
  • Revert back to 7 speed?

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated

  1. seriouslyaverage on

Either a new crankset or back to 7-speed. Technically you might be able to find some offset chainrings to work on the current crankset, but the money and trial and error is best spent elsewhere.

If you are running a larger range cassette, I would personally just get a NW chainring for the crankset and run it as a 1×10.

  2. 10 spd is a narrower chain. Might mesh poorly with your used 7 spd chainrings. You can replace the rings to match a 10 spd set up, but I haven’t really heard of 3 x 10. If you have to keep the rings, you can try putting some chainring spacers on the middle ring to push it over a little bit. That could also introduce new problems. I’d probably just forgo the granny gear and limit the shifting into a pseudo 2 x 10.
