A razor blade was placed on a moving arm which was lowered with a crank. As the arm ran on a track, the razor was pressed against a grinding disc. This was covered in tiny hard bumps. As the blade slid across it, small fragments were chipped off, gradually sharpening the edge. After a few cranks, a mechanism lifted the arm and the blade was rotated, being placed back on the grinder. Once both sides of the razor were incredibly sharp, it would be placed in a handle and used to shave.

  1. There are still some of these today that some people use. You can still pick up a razor just like that. I don't know if people still sharpen the blades though
