  1. Looks like it’s just surface rust. You can clean it up with a wire wheel, scotchbrite, steel wool, or fine sandpaper. Then use a light bit of grease when reassembling.

  2. Seems like a mix of rust and some dried up gunk.

    Sand it so it is smooth and use a light coat of grease when assembling

    The effect on structural integriny is negligable based on the picture.

    ChatGPT would now be able to make a half decent evaluation on such an issue.

    Scotchbrite pad & some WD40 ( wear rubber/nitrile gloves), smear with waterproof grease when assembling.

  4. Stayoffwettrails on

    Evaporust on a paper towel. Wrap it around the steerer, then wrap that in plastic wrap. Will eat the rust but not paint and will save you some work.
