  1. This looks great! How tight are the rear chainstays with 35s? I crammed 35s into my ’74 Raleigh International but I am planning on a 650B conversion for slightly more breathing room.

  2. Nice.

I tend to keep the down tube shifters and just hang the rear derailleur. Friction works it just fine and you don’t lose the whole vintage look.

Your vintage cranks will work fine with a ten speed chain all you really need is the cold set and wheels and rear to get all the gear advantages.

  3. looks great. It will be a cold day in hell before I ever trust Panaracer tires again, most flats I ever had, but very nice supple riding tires.

    What brakes are you using?

    Incredible work! Congrats!

I am happy your shop is very (!) far from where I am, so I can’t even start considering.

I was boo’d out here for a similar retro mod…

Looks nice. Bet it’s fun to ride!

All I’ll say is if you’re gonna hot-rod, hot-rod the stem and brakes too.

I’m no purist but you might as well go whole hog.

  7. Do whatever makes you like the bike. I did a 1x conversion on my old road bike, and love it. The classic group set was not fun to use. Modern parts made me actually want to ride the bike.

    Great looking rig!

Just check that the rear tire isn’t rubbing the frame inside the chainstays as the frame flexes under load. Tires are very abrasive (technically the carbon black that gives tires durability) and they *will* rub grooves into the steel over time.
