I use a mirror so at least if I can see a car about to me and can bail to the sidewalk quickly.

  2. I’d go on side streets or sidewalk, where available. This is the worst kind of street for cycling – multilane highway with no shoulders, and looks like either speed limit is set high, or nobody obeys it.

Edit: and yes, the seat is waaaay too low, it slows you down and puts unnecessary strain on your knees. Your legs should extend _almost_ fully at the bottom of the stroke. Not straight at the knee, but like 10° off straight line.

  3. Tough love ahead…. you either need to take the lane here or use that side walk. You’re getting a ton of close passes. I’m glad that truck with the trailer knew what they were doing. This is the worst way to do this.

You’re riding too far to the right. That’s an invitation to close pass you. Drivers don’t care that you’re being considerate. You’re putting yourself in danger.

Ride further out. Wear bright yellow or orange reflective clothing. Turn on the rear lights.

    And

Get a camera that records the traffic behind you. Make sure it’s in plain sight.

My riding experience has improved tremendously since riding with cameras. I still get the occasional bad driver experience and capture other traffic violations. I report those to the police or upload them to youtube.

You can post them to Reddit r/driving and/or to your city too, like r/DrivingToronto.

And if you get honked at, it’s a good thing. They can see you.

  5. You might benefit from raising your saddle and maybe even your handlebars – I think you’d get more power for uphill that way.

  6. Have you considered going slower or getting smaller bike, your knees aren’t quite hitting your handlebars and that’s where the power comes from (the power to go even slower)

  7. By riding on the side of that lane you’re inviting them to close pass you. Take the entire lane. Then ride that nice wide sidewalk.

  8. I understand commuting and sharing the road. But you cannot rely on others for your safety. If there is a side walk or an alternate route that will keep you at a safer distance from vehicles… id always opt for that. You should too.

  9. Go up on the footpath, no one on it and you are basically going about walking speed.

If you stay on that road you’ll be hit by a car for sure.

As a rule of thumb, your leg should be straight at the bottom of the pedal stroke with your heel on the pedal. So when you’re on the ball of your foot whilst riding it’ll have a slight bend.

  11. Yeah I’m not sure that bike fite you well. There’s people who are in control and intentionally ride slow, to preserve energy or be safe in certain situations. But I could just tell you’re not comfortable at all on that bike.

That’s definitely a dangerous bike route you have. It’s even more dangerous tho, at the way you’re riding. You should definitely hop on the sidewalk, as that looks like a city where they allow that. But also I would suggest getting to a bike shop and getting some advice on what you can do to make your bike more comfortable.

  12. Horrible infrastructure for sure. Uphills are tough in that type of traffic too. Sidewalk is an option, But it’s short and just ends??? You have every right to be in that lane and considering the shortness of that sidewalk, I’d stay in it too. Best of luck out there!

  13. Your seat needs to be high enough that your knee is only slightly bent at the bottom of the stroke. You’ll get the most power and efficiency that way, and hills will be much easier.

You have an MTB, get on the grass! You’ll have a lot less mini heart attacks and start to enjoy the ride

  15. Looks honestly not that bad for it being US plus you didn’t even get honked at!

Adjust your saddle, get flashing lights in the front and back run them whole time you’re on the bike.

Personally i would be on the sidewalk when such is present, looks smooth and okay to drive on – just return to the side of the road when it ends.

Switching gears like that will ruin that bike. Either you’re sitting too low or that bike is too small. I would be on the sidewalk considering there’s no one there and cars are swerving because you’re in part of the lane

  17. I stick to the sidewalk whenever I’m skeptical of safety. If there’s a people on the sidewalk then I dismount and walk past them. But that’s like once a year.

  18. Looks horrible. I’d get an MTB and ride through the adjacent field if necessary. Anything to avoid this.
