This is the crankset in my bike. It’s sg-x-53b.

I bought it used many years ago and the teeth are so worn out that I don’t shift to it anymore.

About two years ago a bike shop told me to replace the disks (if that’s what it’s called) instead of replacing the whole thing. The problem is that I haven’t found the disks for this particular crankset.

So should I just buy a new one, even if it’s not Ultegra?

I use the bike to go to work, so performance is not an issue. On the same token, I don’t want to buy crap or used.

  1. It doesn’t *need* to be chainrings for that specific crankset, and the official Shimano part number replacements are probably few and far between at this point.

But, it’s like a 130mm BCD so you just need a 5 bolt 130mm from one of many manufacturers. If you buy them as a 53/39 set, they will likely shift better. Some manufacturers are Stronglight, Specialites TA, Origin8, Vuelta..

Although, depending on what deals you can find, it might be cheaper to just get a new crankset rather than replacing the chainrings. No reason it needs to be Ultegra.

  2. Buy new chainrings. You don’t need shimano specific ones. Your outer/big ring is a 53-tooth, and your small ring is a 39-tooth. Search for “53t chainring 130 BCD” and “39t chainring 130 BCD.” The 130 correlates to the bolt pattern for the cranks.

If the gearing is too hard, then get new cranks. You could go with a compact crankset that has a 50t outer ring and 34t inner ring. As long as it’s a shimano crank for a road bike, it should work. You also just want to make sure your crank length is the same. It’ll be 170, 172.5, or 175mm long.
