In the midst of an Edmonton deep-freeze, Mariah heads out. Every day, before dawn, while everyone else is sound asleep, she gets ready for her daily deliveries. Mariah is a bike courier, one of a handful of winter cycling snow warriors on Edmonton’s busy downtown streets.
Navigating a beautiful yet dangerous landscape, she shares ice-covered roads with cars and trucks. As the weather changes and the chill intensifies, flesh freezes and the challenges multiply.
Racing through snow and weaving through traffic, Mariah proves her strength, dedication, and capacity for joy. Extreme temperatures, violent winds, slippery roads and snowstorms do not stop a snow warrior.
Returning home in the dark, she dreams of another day doing battle with the elements. She loves her job.
Directed by Frederick Kroetsch and Kurt Spenrath, Snow Warrior is a love letter to winter, revelling in the embrace of the ghostly white shroud that defines the character of the people of the North.

[ ♪ ] [ Snow Crunching Underfoot ] [ Water Gurgling ] )) They say you aren’t a real
bike courier in Edmonton until you do a couple winters. )) Voice on radio: Hey, Mariah,
I don’t know if you can hear me. Check your device. )) This time of year,

Amazing rabbithole the youtube algorithm can take you on. I started swimming this summer after a 10 year hiatus and this week I thought that maybe I could do a triathalon one day. Learned how to bike literally two days ago in my 20s and now I'm here. Love the video, as a New Yorker it took me back to a different time when the winters were new to me and the snow was deep. I must say, that I hate the colder months but I guess I'm starting to learn to appreciate the change in the seasons. I'd love for it to be summer all year but perhaps it wouldn't be summer without the winter. Big kudos to these folks, they look real cool not gonna lie, reminds me of that one video game The Division. I've been pondering if I should to pull the trigger on my first road bike… kinda scared of what might happen if I do. Unsure if I can ride in those cold temperatures as well, NYC streets and drivers are also not very friendly to cyclists.
🖐 from T.
this deserve a 2nd part at least of 20 min long maybe the 4 season
Omg its gerry! ❤❤
Say no to fixed. You could control so much more effectively with a free wheel. Maintenance is not high in brakes and derailleurs, ya'll just make silly excuses to be trendy.
Mountain bikes with larger grippy tyres would be more suitable for this. Im a bike messenger based in Malaysia and I use a mountain bike because the roads are pretty much like the jungle
Brakeless fixie in the snow 😳
Some wider, studded tires would surely help!
Some notes from a 20 year bicycle commuter veteran:
-Respect from drivers is earned, not assumed.
-Don’t hog the road like you’re driving a car
-Don’t break the rules at intersections.
-Wear hi-viz or blaze orange
-Get lights
-Brown sugar? Try studded cyclocross tires. They’re a game changer.
-Ditch the fixed gear (essentially an excuse to ride like an @$$) for a gear box and disc brakes so at least you can stop & accelerate when you really need to.
This was boring AF where did the motivation and funding come from to make such a lack luster "film" it was hilarious when she said "drivers only think about themselves". if thats not the pot calling the kettle black idk what is.
Big respect to you snow warrior.
I love cycling but what you do is extremely tough.
Love from Sumatra, Indonesia 🤘🤘
Respect!
I dont mind riding in the rain or when conditions worsen. Storms can be fun/challenging. I’ve ridden thru hail, cold weather and also in winter. Mind you it’s usually in the spring thaw. There might still be snow on the ground but not near the conditions in this video. I’m on the west coast of Canada so the winters here are pretty mild compared to the rest of Canada.
This is a true snow warrior. You have my respect ✊🏾.
Major A-HOLE in the Audi.
Props to this female she riding fixed gear with clip less pedals and in the winter and in the snow I would said nope 😥. I like biking but I hate snow
be safe now
I like winter riding, but its very dangerous. respect for your hard work.
greetings from hungary.
Nice bike, I ride a Dolan (Terry Dolan). I started with Terry's first bike called the Cougar now I'm riding a Dolan Rebus road bike. Great bikes, Great bike builder, enuf said! I was never a bike courier but in T.O. I rode with my club members in minus 10, 12 Celsius. I'm older now and couldn't image doing that now, I stop riding at around minus 2 depending on the wind and precipitation. It was fun, people thought we were crazy, yeah I guess we were.
What Brand is you backpack?. 😀
Mariah Hoy, ahooooy…
-40, what about wind chill?
fixed gear during winter is dead
Thank you.
The female protagonist is attractive. I want to date her.
I think it would be good to make a documentary with this person as the main character.
I want to meet you once. It seems like we have something in common, whether it's Facebook or Instagram.
are you riding studded tires? I tried doing this but had no traction
6:01 insane driver
Get off the road. You're a hazard for everyone else.
That’s insanity. I downhill mtb & I wouldn’t touch that kinda riding w/ a 10 foot pole
I rode as a messenger in Chgo this is familair but it was heroic in my mind, yeah as others faded and u were riding in sub zero F weather getting almost too warm. Keep it up guys
She didn't answer the question of why they do it. Would love more details about her such as how long has she been doing it, does she plan to continue, maybe salary info. Is it a dying industry? What are hot summers like? Accidents, what type of documents or packages they deliver would be good too. I didn't see a go pro which I've heard many courier's use. What got her into it and what was the learning curve like would be interesting to learn. I'm amazed their bikes don't get stolen when they enter a builing with out bike stations. I'm a little surprised a documentary would highlight this type of job but then give such little info.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊😊💜💜🍎💜💜💜💜💜🍉🍉👍👍🍉💜💜💜💜 GOOD MORNING CUTE LADY. SNOW. WARRIOR. WELCOME TO LUKBAN PROVINCE OF QUEZON PHILIPPINE MABUHAY ON MAY 15 2O25 PAHIYAS FESTIVAL HERE IN LUKBAN PROVINCE OF QUEZON PHILIPPINE MABUHAY IM. A. BIKER TOO PLEASE
You are a very brave person. Suggestion: You should switch to ski/snowboard patrolling or teaching skiing/snowboarding in the winter. Tools appropriate to the situation. Do you at least ride with studded tires? I can't imagine being tailgated by idiots in cars on ice, who will skid over you if you fall. I suspect the brown sugar snow would be easier to traverse on wider tires.
Kudos that was slick well made ….
anyone know what bike she is using? i know its fixed gear, it just seems extremely light when she flipped it over
I wanna go for a ride
Co teraz porabia ❄️ warrior 🤔
Bardzo dobry dokument. Mam nadzieję że nasza odważna i piękna wojowniczka ma się wciąż dobrze ♥️
stumbled across this masterpiece reat video!
Great documentary
respect … wouldn't like do this for sure … don't really like the winter months … it's shit for cycling
