Brakes will be fine, just give them a service. That is a good rear mech that will last a long time. New tyres, saddle and grips will improve comfort straight away, some bars with a bit of sweep will also improve comfort but you might need a longer stem depending on the fit of the bike. The most expensive but most beneficial investment will be a decent wheelset.

1.- Ride it.
2.- If being picky, the front brake is v-brake but the original lever is for cantis. Swap one or the other.
