Hey guys, doing my first bike rebuild and have come up against a problem.
How can i fit a shimano 12 speed rear derailleur on this frame. Is there an adapter that will do the job?
Search Ebay for “bicycle derailleur claw adapter.”
You won’t be able to slide the wheel as far back though.

What sort of frame is it (make, model)? Let’s try to find the correct derailleur hanger or a bodge to get something going

Short answer… 12 speed not gonna happen on that frame. Sorry

I do quite a bit of custom fabrication to make things work, and I often encounter naysayers saying it can’t or shouldn’t be done. I am confident that a hook-style derailleur adapter could be built to add a newer style derailleur mount to that old-school dropout. Maybe one is already available off the shelf? You could even fashion one by hand out of a piece of steel, a cutoff wheel, a drill press, a set of files, and a little ingenuity. That dropout has plenty of room to drill and tap a couple of holes to attach the adapter so that it doesn’t rotate, or you could braze it to the frame. I enjoy custom enhancements, and an old-school bike with modern 12-speed derailleur would be awesome and looks doable to me.

While by using a claw hanger you can fit a derailleur to that bike its highly unlikely you can get one to work on a 12 gear setup, its also highly unlikely you could get one to work with enough range to cope with that size cassette without an extender which won’t work on a claw hanger.
Even if you got a claw hanger with an extender fitted because of the fact that each of these moves the derailleur outward you would start to run up against problems with not having sufficient throw to get across the whole cassette.

You are throwing good money away. Hopefully you don’t regret that.

Not to be that guy. But I would have researched if my frame could handle a rebuild like this before embarking on the rebuild
you need a claw derailleur hanger, if the dropout is long enough to accommodate it.
