Super excited to share my build as I love this subreddit. I’ve been wanting to do a 90s mtb restomod and found this Lava Dome that someone wanted to get rid of. It’s only had two other owners, and seems to have been well taken care of over its 31 years of life. The dings and patina give it so much cool character.

My goal for the rebuild was to preserve and restore as many of the stock parts as possible. But of course, in xbiking fashion, I also wanted to make a few tasteful upgrades!

I’ve recently taken it around local trails and to commute around town, and it just runs so buttery smooth.

For reference, below is a link to the original 1994 Kona catalog where it lists all the original parts. I’ll also include a list of the new parts I used in the comments in case anyone else is looking to do a Kona rebuild.

  1. New parts that I put on:
    * Nitto B352 Albatross bars
    * MKS Sylvan Gordito pedals
    * Maxxis 2.2” Holy Roller tires
    * Shimano Tourney A070 BB-UN300 bottom bracket
    * Shimano HG-41 7-speed cassette
    * WTB Original Trail grips

  2. I have no idea why the project 2 was so iconic – seeing it now it’s pretty basic – but it was officially the coolest fork you could have back then. Kids these days will never know the joy of wanting a rigid steel 26” fork for Christmas…
