Hi, my name is Sarah and I live in a one bed flat in Leeds. I’ll show you the price at the end and let me know whether you think it’s worth it. For context, I live on my own with my cat around 20 minutes walk out of Lead City Center, so it’s super convenient. Although this is a furnished flat, a lot of the furniture I have bought myself, like the bedroom drawers, the TV unit, and the bookcases. There’s plenty of storage, and by storage, I mean hiding things behind the sofa. Having said that, 13 kitchen cupboards for one person is more than enough. The green wall in my bedroom and the shelves in my living room, if you’re my landlord watching this, that wasn’t me. Jokes aside, I think if he lets me have a cat, then he’s probably pretty chill. The bathroom isn’t massive, but it has a bath and it does what it needs to do, so there’s no complaints there. I think my favorite thing about this flat is just how light and area it is, and the bay window alongside the super high ceilings just makes it feel very spacious with enough room to swing a cat if I wanted to. Obviously, it has its faults. There’s cracks in the walls and the bathroom could do with the retile. And despite there being 11 other people in this building, it does seem to be my responsibility to take the bins out every week. The total for this comes to Ā£842 a month, which includes bills and Wi-Fi. And I think it is definitely worth the money.

  1. "Swing a cat" actually means "cat o' nine tails" i.e. a whip. Over the years people have forgotten the original meaning and used the actual animal instead.

I've also found most landlords will allow minor changes in decor so long as you haven't trashed the place and/or you put it back to how it was when you leave. Especially if you've paid for it and cost them nothing.

You'd have to be renting from a complete psychopath for them to evict over one wall painted immaculately at your own expense – and you could probably take them to court.

  2. That sounds like a steal to me. I live in Florida USA. Its super expensive here in the cities. Its at least $1500 for a place like that here. Might be in a shit part of town or in an apartment building without a lot of insulation so you can hear the people above you. For a house unfurnished its at least $3000 a month.
