I've been working on my first bike project and ran into an issue. I've got an 90s mtb that I'm converting from 3×7 to 1×9. Fun project, learning a heap!

I've just changed the 7 speed shimano freehub to a 9 speed freehub, no issue there. I've installed a Microshift Advent derailleur and shifter in combination with a Shimano CS-LG400 9s cassette. For the chain I got a KMC X9. Now I'm running into the issue that however I adjust the rear derailleur I can't get clean shifts and there's quite a lot of noise.

Before I continue the struggle with the setup I thought I'd ask; did I make a mistake and is something not compatible?

  1. Shimano LG cassette use 11 speed spacing, therefore you’ll need 11 speed chain.

KMC X9 is 9 speed chain.

Fix would be to ~~get 11 speed chain or~~ get non LG 9-speed cassette

  2. Cues is designed to work with 11 speed chain no matter which cues mech you use, I think you need a HG 9 speed rear cassette to make that work with 9 speed chain on advent 9 speed mech.

You want CS-HG not CS-LG cassette.
