when Amsterdam became bicycle friendly after the 1970s they didn’t do it to become bicycle friendly they actually did it to make the streets safer bicycles was not a consideration and even in the 80s people were still fighting just to get like a painted Lion on the road what really happened was they made the street safer and then in doing so people started cycling and then as people started cycling they’re like we should build some cycling infrastructure

  1. It's kind of funny how people in the Netherlands in other parts of Europe think that biology and physics is different there and that they don't need to wear bicycle helmets for safety. I've seen some pretty serious bicycle injuries for a rider involving no other bicycles, pedestrians, or vehicles.

  2. I have to disagree with these statements: "Bicycles was not a consideration" "[after making streets safer] people started cycling". Admittedly, I was not in Amsterdam, but in a town a little away, and I was very young and not really aware of the politics [I do remember my dad having a "Blij dat ik rij" sticker], but cycling was a big part of the dutch identity in the 20th C, including before cycle paths. When you say the goal was to make streets safer, it was to make it safer for _kids to cycle_.

And I say that as someone who had to cycle to school on the road originally, and who remembers the cycling path being built in the early 80s – allowing me to cycle to school on my own.

    It absolutely was about cycling.

  3. The rest of the country and state are bike friendly shut up and move. Instead bitching to 20 million people who have been doing the same thing for seventy years.

  4. Full of shit making its bicycle friendly does not do shit to be more safe. In China bicycle friendly city of Shanghai you cross the road the road intersects crosswalk they disregard. It’s impossible to cross the street. Meanwhile in Japan there is bicycle however people prefer walking and metro.

  5. Yeah, my son is presently recovering from an extensive operation on his elbow, caused by a cyclist in Amsterdam that was using his phone while cycling and my son was cycling along blissfully thinking no one would be stupid enough to run into the rear of his bike! Of course the offending cyclist rode off.

  6. This is part of their 15 minute city plan. Ever wonder why drivers Ed was so easy to pass? We have bad drivers everywhere who don't know the 5 Seeing Habits, don't even know the basics of the rules of the road. The govt creates or plans a problem, then conveniently comes up with the "solution" that they wanted to do all along. – 15 minute cities. – easier to control the population that way. They've been cracking down on the Homish community because they're too self sufficient. Control of the people is their game, and you people are blindly and willingly going along with it.

  7. I personally think cars have turned humans into zombie robots. Cars have kind of become puppet masters over humans – kind of a "greater than thou" over individual humans. It's disgusting to see car drivers completely ignore pedestrians. It's like these zombies DRIVE from "home" to work and never recognize other living beings in between. Disheartening. Of course, there are exceptions. But humanity has changed since the advent of cars. (Did you know Ford used to be really good friends with Hitler? Just a little note.)
