I’m brand spanking new to cycling and replaced my first flat and think I damaged the tire in the process. It’s an old tire and I did the replacement by hand without using a screwdriver but I didn’t notice this before changing it.

I probably get some new tires if I were you. Just to be safe
“It’s an old tire” Ride it until you get a new one. Don’t know how the rubber peeled off but an old tire is suspect, anyway.
Also, don’t ever use a screwdriver for that, get a Pedros plastic lever when you buy new tires
