Hey everyone, just wanted to share a quick update about my hardtail setup. I’ve been riding with Schwalbe Smart Sam 29×2.25 tires since I bought the bike — great for trails and mixed terrain, but honestly felt like dragging sandbags anytime I rode on pavement.

Last week I decided to switch things up and mounted a pair of Continental Contact Urban tires, and wow… it’s a completely different bike now. The difference on the road is night and day — rolls faster, smoother, and quieter. I can actually keep a consistent pace without feeling like I’m fighting resistance the whole time.

The bike feels lighter and way more responsive. Even acceleration and cornering feel sharper. I still wouldn’t take it on any serious trails with these tires, but for city rides, commuting, and weekend road spins, this setup is perfect.

If anyone’s been on the fence about swapping their MTB tires for something slicker for road use — do it. It’s probably the best low-cost upgrade I’ve made in a while.

Curious what is your opinion on slicks for hardtail? What’s your favorite setup?

  1. People nowadays put big gravel tires on MTBs. (the other way around too, thin XC tires on gravel bikes)

Schwalbe even expanded their race gravel tires with a 55-622 size.
