    That’s rim tape, which is to protect the inner tube from the spoke holes.

    You need to replace that with tubeless tape.

  2. First check that the rim itself is suitable for tubeless tyres. It should say so somewhere on the rim. Failing that, tubeless rims have a distinctive ’shoulder’ on each side which helps retain the tyre should pressure drop (eg. A puncture – tubeless punctures tend not to deflate catastrophically). These ‘shoulders’ are also what makes tubeless tyres such a pain to install sometimes!

    If so, remove the existing rim tape & apply tubeless tape (wider than the declared rim width by at least 2mm). Ensure that the tape is fixed smoothly (always maintain a good degree of tension whilst sticking down) & sits cleanly into the rim bed & over the shoulders.

    I do two full circuits of tape per wheel.
