Honestly fixing shifters is a nightmare(even if you could source parts which is unlikely since ur shifter is 30 years old., I’ve seen shifters just ‘explode’ upon disassembly. Hard to hear but ur best bet is to just replace it.

Usually the spring isn’t worn so much as the moving parts are gummed up. Have you flushed it with a cleaner and tried moving any of the pawls around?

Buy a used one. These Shimano ST-M050 were pretty common back in the day. No need to specially search for “Exage 400 LX”; the Exage 500 CX and probably many more groups had the exact same ST-M050, just in different colours
