Too far is when viewers stop and/or sponsors won’t spend.
There was a long running commercial for a car company, car tires, some day trading platform. Real money.
Motorsport has killed plenty of drivers and did so unapologetically, and for decades. When sponsors stopped spending things changed. Definitely not there yet with Rampage.
It’s the perfect media business. No way they would change the model. Athletes are totally interchangeable.

If I am being real, I’ve gradually gone from being blown away by the skill level and huge cahones of the riders to feeling kind of icky watching it.
That’s on me though. Plenty of other sports are very high risk or result in serious long term harm to the athletes.
The only thing that makes this exceptional is the relatively low compensation of the athletes plus the risk taking is sort of the goal versus being incidental to the goal. Maybe that’s where the ick comes from.

It’s always been a ridiculous event. People were watching the first few and saying it was too dangerous then. No one is forcing these athletes to do it.
Plenty of great riders have turned up and either gone ‘nope’ or just picked an ‘easy’ way down the hill. Brage Vestivik went and said it wasn’t for him, Sam Pilgrim and Anton Thelander rocked up and basically made themselves the easiest line they could all the way down (Anton’s own words on The Ride Companion podcast).
There have been plenty of others who either walked away or turned down invites.
These men and women go there through their own choice, none of their sponsors are forcing them to. There are plenty of other ways to make marketable content without going.
